The song of "Auld Lang Syne" could be heard, being sang by the party goers, after the ball dropped announcing the new year was now upon them. The music dim in the background as they stood at the balcony, away from the others so they could get a kiss in before rejoining the others.
They did this, year after year, giving themselves the opportunity to give each other the first kiss of the year without others interfering. At first it was due to necessity, for no one knew. About them, that is. That if given a choice, they would choose each other to be stranded on a desolate island, then being with a beautiful woman like so many males would prefer when questioned on "Who would you like to be stranded with."
But now, after leaving the military, and working among true friends, a few knew their most personal secret. Those who needed to know so that the other was not left in the dark if something serious happened to either of them.
Dirk still liked to date girls. He liked their curves, and softness, and since high school he developed the reputation of a love them and leave them type of guy, but still there was a line of them wanting to see if they could entice him.
But there was only one person on the earth that he deemed worthy of the first kiss of the year. Al.
Now, on the balcony, standing to the side, somewhat in shadow, Dirk had him where he liked him. In his arm, kissing him, with a bit of tongue, hearing a low moan that elicits more to come if they got out of there. But they would stay, for a little while, then go home and ring in the new year in style that any committed couple would, great sex.
Pulling apart, though reluctant. Dirk's smile could be seen in the darkness. Al takes the time to rest his head on his shoulder, feeling the warmth of Dirk's embrace. Each year it gets easier, more relaxed, knowing that each is committed to each other.
"Happy New Year Al," Al hears said over him, in Dirk's lovable voice. He knows why so many girls like him, but he's lucky enough to have his love, his devotedness. And for Dirk's sentimental feelings on traditions, like this. The first kiss of the new year.
"Happy New Year Dirk." And may the new year bring more contentment.
